Spring 2026 data scholarship recipient 

Congratulations to the recipient of LDC’s Spring 2026 data scholarship:

Doma Akshitha Reddy: Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (India): Bachelor of Engineering, Information Technology. Doma is awarded copies of TIMIT Acoustic-Phonetic Continuous Speech Corpus and The CMU Kids Corpus for their work in child speech. 

Since 2010, LDC has awarded scholarships to successful student applicants twice each year. To date more than 242 corpora have been distributed to 162 students across 38 countries. We proudly celebrate their achievements and the contributions their research has made to the broader community.

New publications:

2022 NIST Language Recognition Evaluation Test and Development Sets was developed by LDC and  NIST and contains the test and development data, metadata, answer keys, and documentation for the 2022 NIST Language Recognition Evaluation (LRE22). The source data is comprised of 222 hours of conversational telephone speech (CTS) and broadcast narrowband speech (BNBS) in 14 languages: Afrikaans, Tunisian Arabic, Algerian Arabic, Libyan Arabic, South African English, Indian-accented South African English, North African French, Ndebele, Oromo, Tigrinya, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.

For the CTS collections, a small number of native speakers made single calls to multiple individuals in their social network. Calls lasted 8-15 minutes; speakers were free to discuss any topic. The BNBS data was collected from streaming radio programming, focused on broadcasts that included narrowband speech (e.g., call-ins to a talk show). Portions of the CTS callee call sides and portions of each broadcast recording were manually audited by native speakers to verify language and quality.

LRE22 emphasized language recognition for African languages, including low resource languages, and expanded the range of test segment durations. Further information about the 2022 evaluation can be found in the 2022 NIST Language Recognition Evaluation Plan.

KAIROS Schema Learning Background Source Data was developed by LDC and includes 14,000 English and Spanish documents representing text, audio, video, image, and multimedia resources collected during the DARPA KAIROS program as supplemental background source data for the KAIROS Schema Learning Corpus (SLC). The purpose of the supplemental collection was to increase the amount of English and Spanish data with multimedia components for schema learning and to add domains not well represented in existing Spanish data. The supplemental data in this release includes material from the business and logistics domains, instructional documents and multimedia news.

The complete set of SLC background source data (including the data in this publication) totaled 16.2 million English, Russian and Spanish documents and more than 125,000 audio, video, image, or multimedia resources. A large portion of that data was drawn from pre-existing LDC datasets.

The SLC and KAIROS Schema Learning Complex Event Annotation (LDC2025T07), containing English and Spanish text, audio, video, and image material labeled for 93 real-world complex events, constitute the data used by KAIROS system developers for schema learning.

KAIROS systems utilized formal event representations in the form of schema libraries that specified the steps, preconditions and constraints for an open set of complex events; schemas were then used in combination with event extraction to characterize and make predictions about real-world events in a large multilingual, multimedia corpus.

LORELEI Russian Representative Language Pack contains over 1.26 billion words of Russian monolingual text, 360,00 words of which were translated into English, 3 million words of found Russian-English parallel text, and 87,000 Russian words translated from English data. Approximately 83,000 words were annotated for simple named entities, around 26,000 words were annotated for full entity (including nominals and pronouns), entity linking and situation frames (identifying entities, needs and issues) and nearly 9,000 words were covered by noun phrase chunking annotation. Data was collected from discussion forum, news, reference, social network, and weblogs.

The LORELEI (Low Resource Languages for Emergent Incidents) program was concerned with building human language technology for low resource languages in the context of emergent situations. Representative languages were selected to provide broad typological coverage.

The knowledge base for entity linking annotation is available separately as LORELEI Entity Detection and Linking Knowledge Base (LDC2020T10).

It’s time to renew your LDC membership for 2026. Any organization that joins the Consortium or renews their membership before March 2, 2026, will receive a 10% discount off the membership fee. 

In addition to accessing new publications, current LDC members enjoy the benefit of licensing at reduced fees older data from our Catalog of close to 1000 holdings. Current-year for-profit members may use most data for commercial applications.

Plans for next year’s publications are in progress. Among the expected releases are:  

  • KAIROS schema learning corpus background data and Phase 1 evaluation datasets: multimodal English and Spanish source data and annotations for reasoning about complex real-world events 
  • CALL MY NET 2: 800+ hours of Tunisian-Arabic conversational telephone speech from over 400 speakers to support text independent speaker recognition, used in the 2018 NIST Speaker Recognition Evaluation
  • Multi-language conversational telephone speech: multiple releases, hundreds of hours of speech from speakers of confusable linguistic varieties (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Slavic, Spanish) to support language identification

  • IARPA MATERIAL language packs: conversational telephone speech, transcripts, English translations, annotations and queries in multiple languages (e.g., Lithuanian, Pashto, Swahili, Tagalog)

Spring 2026 data scholarship application deadline
Applications are now being accepted through January 15, 2026 for the Spring 2026 LDC data scholarship program which provides university students with no-cost access to LDC data. Consult the LDC Data Scholarships page for more information about program rules and submission requirements.
 
New publications:
AnnoDIFP (Annotated Data for the Investigation of Facets of Personality) CTS (Conversational Telephone Speech) Audio and Transcripts was developed by LDC, the Florida Institute of Technology and the University of New Haven to support algorithm development for predicting personality traits. It contains 242.52 hours of English telephone audio recordings and transcripts from 1,179 telephone calls involving 327 participants paired with scores from two self-reported personality assessments, HEXACO Personality Inventory (Revised) (HEXACO-PI-R) and Short Dark Triad (SD3).

This corpus contains audio and transcripts for 277 participants and transcripts only for 50 participants. Telephone calls were collected using LDC's robot-operator platform. The operator called participants every 24 hours during their indicated availability and paired them with another participant to speak on a prompted topic for 10 minutes. Transcripts were produced automatically using the Rev.ai speech-to-text service.

LORELEI Ilocano Incident Language Pack was developed by LDC and is comprised of 8.9 million words of Ilocano monolingual text, 3.3 million words of English monolingual text, 3.2 million words of parallel Ilocano-English text, and 3 million words annotated for entity discovery and linking and situation frames. It constitutes all of the text data, annotations, supplemental resources and related software tools for the Ilocano language used in the DARPA LORELEI / LoReHLT 2019 Evaluation.

The LORELEI (Low Resource Languages for Emergent Incidents) program was concerned with building human language technology for low resource languages in the context of emergent situations. In the evaluation scenario, an unforeseen event triggered a need for humanitarian and logistical support in a region where the incident language had received little or no attention in NLP research. Evaluation participants provided NLP solutions, including information extraction and machine translation, with limited resources and limited development time.

Data was collected from news, social network, weblog, newsgroup, discussion forum, and reference material. Entity discovery and linking annotation identified entities to be detected by systems for scoring purposes. Situation frame analysis was designed to extract basic information about needs and relevant issues for planning a disaster response effort.

LDC data and commercial technology development
For-profit organizations are reminded that an LDC membership is a pre-requisite for obtaining a commercial license to almost all LDC databases. Non-member organizations, including non-member for-profit organizations, cannot use LDC data to develop or test products for commercialization, nor can they use LDC data in any commercial product or for any commercial purpose. LDC data users should consult corpus-specific license agreements for limitations on the use of certain corpora. Visit the Licensing page for further information.

New publications:

Mixer 7 English Speech was developed by LDC and contains 12,321 hours of audio recordings of interviews, transcript readings and conversational telephone speech involving 222 distinct English speakers. This material was collected by LDC in 2010-2011 as part of the Mixer project, and the recordings were used in the 2012 NIST SRE test set.

Recruited speakers were connected through a robot operator to carry on casual conversations on a pre-set topic lasting up to 10 minutes. Participants also visited LDC’s human subjects collection lab equipped with a 14-microphone array where they participated in interviews and transcript readings and conducted telephone calls under varying conditions. Selected speaker metadata was also collected.

AIDA Scenario 1 Evaluation Topic Source Data, Annotation and Assessment was developed by LDC and is comprised of English, Russian and Ukrainian web documents (text, video, image), annotations and assessments used in the AIDA Phase 1 pilot and final evaluations. The Phase 1 scenario focused on political relations between Russia and Ukraine in the 2010s. The material in this corpus covers the following events: Suspicious Deaths and Murders in Ukraine (January-April 2015); Odessa Tragedy (May 2, 2014); and Siege of Sloviansk and Battle of Kramatorsk (April-July 2014).

The corpus contains 10,522 documents, annotations for 386 of those documents, and assessment results covering 77,965 responses in 1,525 of those documents. Annotations were performed in three steps: (1) within-document labels for scenario-related entities, relations and events; (2) coreference annotation across documents by linking information elements to a knowledge base; and (3) indications of any relationship between labeled events/relations and hypotheses about the scenario. In the assessment phase, LDC annotators reviewed and judged system response files to provide evaluation organizers with a means for scoring submissions. Assessment tasks included zero-hop assessment, class-based assessment, graph assessment and hypothesis assessment. 

The DARPA AIDA (Active Interpretation of Disparate Alternatives) program aimed to develop a multi-hypothesis semantic engine to generate explicit alternative interpretations of events, situations and trends from a variety of unstructured sources. LDC supported AIDA by collecting, creating and annotating multimodal linguistic resources in multiple languages.

Approximately 103,000 words were annotated for simple named entities and over 25,000 words were annotated for full entity (including nominals and pronouns), entity linking and situation frames (identifying entities, needs and issues). Data was collected from discussion forum, news, reference, social network, and weblogs.

LoReHLT Hausa Representative Language Pack

New publications:

LoReHLT Hausa Representative Language Pack was developed by LDC and is comprised of approximately 4.4 million words of Hausa monolingual text, 86,000 Hausa words translated from English data, and 30 minutes of Hausa audio recordings. Approximately 96,000 words were annotated for named entities and over 13,000 words were annotated for full entity including nominals and pronouns. Noun-phrase chunking was applied to more than 7,400 words. Over 9,600 words were labeled with simple semantic annotation. Topic annotation was applied to the audio recordings. Data was collected from discussion forum, news, reference, social network, amateur web audio recordings, and weblogs.

LoReHLT was a companion project of the DARPA LORELEI program. The LORELEI (Low Resource Languages for Emergent Incidents) program was concerned with building human language technology for low resource languages in the context of emergent situations. Representative languages were selected to provide broad typological coverage.

AIDA Scenario 2 Practice Topic Source Data was developed by LDC and is comprised of 1500 root documents (text, image, and video) from English, Russian, and Spanish web sources. Each phase of the AIDA program centered on a specific scenario, or broad topic area, with related subtopics designated as either practice subtopics or evaluation subtopics. The Phase 2 scenario focused on the socioeconomic and political crisis in Venezuela since 2010. This corpus constitutes the full set of topic-focused documents for Phase 2 practice subtopics.

The DARPA AIDA (Active Interpretation of Disparate Alternatives) program aimed to develop a multi-hypothesis semantic engine to generate explicit alternative interpretations of events, situations and trends from a variety of unstructured sources. LDC supported AIDA by collecting, creating and annotating multimodal linguistic resources in multiple languages.

New publications:

KASET - Kurmanji and Sorani Kurdish Speech and Transcripts consists of 147 hours of telephone conversations (289 recordings) and broadcast news (410 recordings) in two Kurdish dialects: Kurmanji Kurdish and Sorani Kurdish along with transcripts covering 60 hours of those recordings. Kurdish is spoken primarily in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Sorani and Kurmanji are the two widely spoken dialects of the Kurdish language.

The telephone speech was generated from calls by native Kurdish speakers in the United States to North American acquaintances in their social network. The broadcast news audio was collected from multiple streaming radio and television broadcast programs (narrowband and wideband audio), many of which contained a mix of Kurmanji and Sorani Kurdish. Native speaker auditors identified a 5-10 minute span from each broadcast recording for transcription. 

Full telephone recordings that passed the native speaker audit were transcribed. This release includes speaker information, such as gender, year of birth, and language.

LORELEI Farsi Representative Language Pack was developed by LDC and is comprised of approximately 250 million words of Farsi monolingual text, 120,000 Farsi words translated from English data, and 751,000 words of found Farsi-English parallel text. Approximately 75,000 words were annotated for named entities and up to 22,000 words were annotated for entity discovery and linking and situation frames (identifying entities, needs and issues). Data was collected from discussion forum, news, reference, social network, and weblogs.

Fall 2023 LDC Data Scholarship Program 

Student applications for the Fall 2023 LDC Data Scholarship program are being accepted now through September 15, 2023. This program provides eligible students with no-cost access to LDC data. Students must complete an application consisting of a data use proposal and letter of support from their advisor. This material was collected by LDC in 2011-2012 as part of the Mixer project, and the recordings were used in the 2012 NIST SRE test set.

Recruited speakers were connected through a robot operator to carry on casual conversations on a pre-set topic lasting up to 10 minutes. Participants also visited LDC’s human subjects collection lab equipped with a 14-microphone array where they participated in interviews and transcript readings and conducted up to 3 telephone calls under varying conditions. Selected speaker metadata was also collected.

Data was collected from discussion forum, news, reference, social network, and weblogs.

2019 NIST Speaker Recognition Evaluation Test Set – CTS Challenge, developed by LDC and NIST, contains 635 hours of Tunisian Arabic telephone recordings for development and test, answer keys, enrollment, trial files and documentation from the CTS Challenge portion of the NIST-sponsored 2019 Speaker Recognition Evaluation. The 2019 evaluation was conducted in two parts: (1) a leaderboard-style challenge based on conversational telephone speech from LDC's Call My Net 2 (CMN2) corpus; and (2) a separate evaluation using audio-visual material collected by LDC for the VAST (Video Annotation for Speech Technology) project (released as LDC2023V01).
 
The telephone speech data for the CTS Challenge was drawn from the CMN2 collection conducted by LDC in Tunisia in which Tunisian Arabic speakers called friends or relatives who agreed to record their telephone conversations lasting between 8-10 minutes. The speech segments include PSTN (public switched telephone network) and VOIP (voice over IP) data.

LORELEI Zulu Representative Language Pack is comprised of over 5 million words of Zulu monolingual text, 2.7 million words of found Zulu-English parallel text, and 71,000 Zulu words translated from English data. Data was collected from discussion forum, news, reference, social network, and weblogs.

We would not have achieved this milestone without the continued support and collaboration of our members, friends, and the community. We are grateful. As we enter our fourth decade, we pledge to continue to serve the community and our members by distributing high quality, diverse data and by providing top-notch member services and research program support.

Mixer 3 Speech contains 3,200 hours of conversational telephone speech involving 3,875 speakers, 19,595 telephone recordings and 26 distinct languages. This material was collected by LDC from 2005-2007 as part of the Mixer project, and recordings in this corpus were used in NIST Speaker Recognition Evaluation and NIST Language Recognition Evaluation corpora, including 2006 SRE and 2007 LRE.

Recordings were generated using LDC's computer telephony system. Recruited speakers were connected through a robot operator to carry on casual conversations lasting up to 10 minutes. Subjects fluent in languages other than English were asked to complete at least one non-English call. Metadata includes the number of calls per subject and language as well as speaker demographic information.

30th Anniversary Highlight: CSR  
The CSR (continuous speech recognition) corpus series was developed in the early 1990s under DARPA’s Spoken Language Program to support research on large-vocabulary CSR systems. 

CSR-I (WSJ0) Complete (LDC93S6A) and CSR-II (WSJ1) Complete (LDC94S13A) contain speech from a machine-readable corpus of Wall Street Journal news text. They also include spontaneous dictation by journalists of hypothetical news articles as well as transcripts.

The text in CSR-I (WSJ0) was selected to fall within either a 5,000-word subset or a 20,000-word subset. Audio includes speaker-dependent and speaker-independent sections as well as sentences with verbalized and nonverbalized punctuation. (Doddington, 1992). CSR-II features “Hub and Spoke” test sets that include a 5,000-word subset and a 64,000-word subset. Both data sets were collected using two microphones – a close-talking Sennheiser HMD414 and a second microphone of varying type. 

WSJ0 Cambridge Read News (LDC95S24) was developed by Cambridge University and consists of native British English speakers reading CSR WSJ news text, specifically, sentences from the 5,000-word and 64,000-word subsets. All speakers also recorded a common set of 18 adaptation sentences.  

The CSR corpora continue to have value for the research community. CSR-I (WSJ0) target utterances were used in the CHiME2 and CHiME3 challenges which focused on distant-microphone automatic speech recognition in real-world environments. CHiME2 WSJ0 (LDC2017S10) and CHiME2 Grid (LDC2017S07) each contain over 120 hours of English speech from a noisy living room environment. CHiME3 (LDC2017S24) consists of 342 hours of English speech and transcripts from noisy environments and 50 hours of noisy environment audio. 

CSR-I target utterances were also used in the Distant-Speech Interaction for Robust Home Applications (DIRHA) Project which addressed natural spontaneous speech interaction with distant microphones in a domestic environment. DIRHA English WSJ Audio (LDC2018S01) is comprised of approximately 85 hours of real and simulated read speech from native American English speakers in an apartment setting with typical domestic background noises and inter/intra-room reverberation effects.

Multi-Channel WSJ Audio (LDC2014S03), designed to address the challenges of speech recognition in meetings, contains 100 hours of audio from British English speakers reading sentences from WSJ0 Cambridge Read News. There were three recording scenarios: a single stationary speaker, two stationary overlapping speakers, and one single moving speaker.

New publications:
 
AIDA Ukrainian Broadcast and Telephone Speech Audio and Transcripts and is comprised of approximately 156 hours of Ukrainian conversational telephone speech and broadcast news audio with 1.2 million words of corresponding orthographic transcripts. 
 
The news audio data was taken from 87 recordings broadcast by various Ukrainian sources. The telephone speech was generated from telephone calls by native Ukrainian speakers to acquaintances in their social network. Native Ukrainian speakers manually segmented the data into sentence-level units as part of the transcription process.
 
The broadcast recordings and transcripts were produced by LDC to support the DARPA AIDA (Active Interpretation of Disparate Alternatives) program which aimed to develop a multi-hypothesis semantic engine to generate explicit alternative interpretations of events, situations and trends from a variety of unstructured sources. The telephone speech audio recordings were collected by LDC to support the NIST 2011 Language Recognition Evaluation  and are also contained in Multi-Language Conversational Telephone Speech 2011 – Slavic Group LDC2016S11.

LORELEI Swahili Representative Language Pack was developed by LDC and is comprised of approximately 4.3 million words of Swahili monolingual text, 90,000 Swahili words translated from English data, and 545,000 words of found Swahili-English parallel text. Approximately 100,000 words were annotated for named entities and up to 26,000 words were annotated for entity discovery and linking and situation frames (identifying entities, needs and issues). Data was collected from discussion forum, news, reference, social network, and weblogs.

The LORELEI (Low Resource Languages for Emergent Incidents) program was concerned with building human language technology for low resource languages in the context of emergent situations. Representative languages were selected to provide broad typological coverage.

The knowledge base for entity linking annotation is available separately as LORELEI Entity Detection and Linking Knowledge Base (LDC2020T10).

Membership Year 2023 publication preview The 2023 membership year is approaching and plans for next year’s publications are in progress. Among the expected releases are: 

  • AIDA Ukrainian Broadcast and Telephone Speech Audio and Transcripts: 156 hours of Ukrainian conversational telephone speech and broadcast news with 1.2 million words of corresponding orthographic transcripts 
  • 2019 NIST SRE: audiovisual and leaderboard challenge sets based on amateur videos and Tunisian Arabic telephone speech, respectively

LDC data and commercial technology development
For-profit organizations are reminded that an LDC membership is a pre-requisite for obtaining a commercial license to almost all LDC databases. Non-member organizations, including non-member for-profit organizations, cannot use LDC data to develop or test products for commercialization, nor can they use LDC data in any commercial product or for any commercial purpose. LDC data users should consult corpus-specific license agreements for limitations on the use of certain corpora. Visit the Licensing page for further information.

30th Anniversary Highlight: ACE 
The objective of the Automatic Content Extraction (ACE) program was to develop the capability to extract meaning (entities, relations and events) from multimedia sources (Doddington, et al., 2004). LDC supported ACE by creating annotation guidelines, corpora and other linguistic resources, including training and test data for the common task research evaluations (Strassel, et al., 2003Huang, et al., 2004).
There are multiple data sets in LDC’s Catalog from the program. One that regularly makes the list of LDC’s top ten most licensed corpora is ACE 2005 Multilingual Training Corpus (LDC2006T06). This data set contains 1,800 files of mixed genre text in English, Arabic, and Chinese annotated for entities, relations, and events. The genres include newswire, broadcast news, broadcast conversation, weblog, discussion forums, and conversational telephone speech. 
Another popular data set, ACE 2004 Multilingual Training Corpus (LDC2005T09), consists of varied genre text in English (158,000 words), Chinese (307,000 characters, 154,000 words), and Arabic (151,000 words) annotated for entities and relations.
ACE 2007 Multilingual Training Corpus (LDC2014T18) has the complete set of Arabic and Spanish training data for the 2007 ACE technology evaluation, specifically, Arabic and Spanish newswire data and Arabic weblogs annotated for entities and temporal expressions.
Other ACE corpora in the Catalog include ACE 2005 SpatialML Annotations in English and Mandarin (LDC2008T03LDC2010T09, LDC2011T02), Datasets for Generic Relation Extraction (reACE)TIDES Extraction (ACE) 2003 Multilingual Training DataACE-2 Version 1.0ACE Time Normalization (TERN) 2004 English Training Data v 1.0 (TERN), and more.

New publications:Rime-Cantonese: A Normalized Cantonese Jyutping Lexicon was developed by the Cantonese Computational Linguistics Infrastructure Working Group. It contains approximately 130,000 Cantonese character, word, and phrase entries paired with their corresponding romanized pronunciations in Jyutping, a scheme created by The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong.Data was collected from a variety of physical and online sources. The character collection was subjected to a normalization process for differences between traditional and simplified Chinese, regional differences and other variants in Chinese characters, and differences in orthography.2022 members can access this corpus through their LDC accounts. 2017 NIST Language Recognition Evaluation Training and Development Sets contains training and development material for the 2017 NIST Language Recognition Evaluation. It consists of 2,100 hours of conversational telephone speech, broadcast conversation, broadcast narrow band speech, and speech from video in the following 14 languages, dialects, and varieties: Arabic (Iraqi, Levantine, Maghrebi, Egyptian), English (British, American), Polish, Russian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish (Caribbean, European, Latin American Continental), and Chinese (Mandarin, Min Nan). The 2017 evaluation focused on differentiating closely related language pairs. Source data is from LDC's CALLFRIEND and Fisher telephone collections, the VAST video collection, various broadcast sources, and earlier NIST LRE test sets.

LORELEI Bengali Representative Language Pack was developed by LDC and is comprised of approximately 144 million words of Bengali monolingual text, 96,000 Bengali words translated from English data, and over 2 million words of found Bengali-English parallel text. Approximately 86,000 words were annotated for named entities and up to 25,000 words were annotated for entity discovery and linking and situation frames (identifying entities, needs and issues).
